NYC Periodontist
Dental implants are the state-of-the-art when it comes to tooth replacements. They aren't just surface solutions like a bridge or dentures. An implant replaces the root underneath the gums in addition to the tooth on top of them. Such an advanced procedure is best done by our
NYC periodontist. Here at Dental Specialty Associates, you will have your implant put in by an experienced and expert oral surgeon, so you know it will be done correctly.
The first step is to schedule an exam and consultation at our office where you will find out if you're a good candidate for an implant. One of the most important qualifications for implants is to have a jaw that is strong and thick enough to support the post (the root replacement). Our
NYC periodontist will do the necessary testing. But even if it turns out that your jaw makes you a poor candidate, there's something we can do. Bone grafting is a procedure in which bone tissue is harvested from another part of your body, or gotten from a tissue bank, and then transferred to your jaw bone. Your own tissue will grow around it, forming a thicker new bone that will be able to accept the implant.
The process of putting in a dental implant begins with the surgical placement of the titanium post in your jaw by our
NYC periodontist. Over several months, your jaw bone will eventually fuse with the post. This creates a very strong and dependable bond that the tooth portion of the implant can be added to. And that, of course, is step two. A tooth-colored crown is cemented to the post and the result is a new tooth that looks, feels, and acts just like a real tooth does.
In some ways, an implant will be even superior to a natural tooth. It won't be subject to cavities, and will never need root canal therapy or to be extracted. You will be able to chew any food, even the toughest ones; and you can smile and speak with full confidence. With proper care, your implant done by our NYC periodontist can last a lifetime.
